Today, I bring you a match review from the CD Mafra and UD Oliveirense game that took place yesterday, Jan. 26th, 2025.
As most of my blog readers know, I currently play football in Portugal for the youth division of CD Mafra so when the opportunity for me to cover our senior men's team (who play in Liga Portugal 2 – the second level of professional Portuguese football) came around, I could not pass it up.
A Pivotal Matchup
Heading into this game, there was a lot of pressure placed on both teams.

CD Mafra entered the match with the pressure of their 16th-place position, a marked contrast to their 9th-place finish last season. A win was going to be crucial to close the five-point gap between themselves and safety from relegation. For Oliveirense, sitting at the bottom of the league table, this was a chance to spark a much-needed turnaround.
The match also carried additional weight, given the teams' previous encounter earlier in the season, which ended in a scoreless draw. This was a chance for both teams to claim valuable points. Yet, neither team at the end of the day came away with the needed 3 points (below is the table going into the game on Sunday).
Weather Challenges and Tactical Adjustments
The match was played under less-than-ideal conditions. While we were safe from the strong winds and rain in the press box, the players were not and had to contend with them.
It was one of those days where the goalie would launch a kick upfield, and the wind would catch the ball and send it back the way it came. During the game, long balls would be pushed off course and aerial duels were unpredictable. Both coaches acknowledged post-match that the conditions disrupted their game plans, forcing on-the-fly adjustments.
Antonio Campos, coach of UD Oliveirense said that one of the things he had to adjust because of the wind was the way in which their wingers and fullbacks participated in the attack:
“Our idea is to have the wingers very wide and open, and when the ball arrives to the wingers, we want our fullback to join in the attack and come through the middle and exploit space in Mafra’s defensive line. When we realized it would be hard to do that because of the weather conditions, we asked the winger on the opposite side to be more tucked in or make runs behind the defensive line but to always be ready that if the ball comes to the near side, be very open. But because of the wind, we were not able to do that with potency.”
Tiago Ferreira, CD Mafra's head coach, also talked about how weather conditions can’t be the reason you win, lose, or draw a game; it’s something to contend with, something you need to adapt to, but he was very proud of the fight and attitude of his players throughout the game.
A Tale of Two Struggles
Despite the challenges, the match was an intense defensive contest. After the game, Antonio Campos praised his side's defensive solidity and said it was the high point of the matchup for his team. CD Mafra’s head coach, Tiago Ferreira, highlighted and praised his team's efforts.
Missed Chances in the Final Third
Mafra appeared the more likely to break the deadlock, particularly in the second half. Their most promising moments came from set pieces, with a well-placed header narrowly missing the target. The combination play between captain Gui Ferreira and Lucas Gabriel showed sparks of creativity, but a lack of precision in the final third proved costly.
We saw moments of quality from CD Mafra, but decision-making in and around the box let them down; shots were rushed, with one-touch efforts sailing over the bar when a calmer approach could have yielded better results. Oliveirense’s resolute defence further frustrated Mafra’s attacking efforts, cutting off passing lanes and absorbing pressure effectively.
Fan Reactions
While the Mafra faithful were vocal in their support throughout the match, at the final whistle some fans expressed their disappointment with jeers, a response that felt harsh considering the visible effort from the players. The team visibly disappointed still made sure to acknowledge their supporters.
“The players gave their all in difficult conditions,” Tiago Ferreira remarked in his post-match comments. “The attitude they showed to keep fighting is a positive takeaway.”
Ultimately, at the end of 90 minutes, defenses were on top, attacking prowess was lacking, and CD Mafra hosted UD Oliveirense in a contest that ended in a 0-0 draw. Both teams, struggling to find form in a fiercely competitive league, were left rueing missed opportunities and grappling with the reality of their positions in the standings.
A Balanced League with Opportunities Ahead
Despite the disappointment, CD Mafra has shown they can compete with the best in the league, evidenced by recent results such as a victory over Benfica B (who currently sit in 3rd place) and a draw against the FC Penafiel, the top team in the league. These glimpses of potential suggest that there is still so much this squad can offer and a lot of fight left to give.
